The annual General Assembly of the WFO is an important event for the institutional life of the world farming community. It reminds the international community of the critical role played by the farmers in the global action agenda for the achievement of a sustainable future for our planet.
WFO is currently entering a new face that will be formalized in Helsinki, with the adoption of the AGENDA 2018-2028, a Strategic Framework that will guide the life of this Organization for the next ten years. Implementing the WFO bottom up approach, the 2018-2028 Strategic Framework was prepared with the active contribution of all WFO members and is the expression of members’ needs and suggestions on WFO objectives.
As part of the AGENDA 2018-2028, WFO 2017 GA will also adopt the revision of its policies on Food Security, Climate Change and Value Chain, as well as, a brand-new Policy paper on Livestock. These papers will equip the Organization with innovative and up to date tools to respond to the global agenda on agriculture, ensuring that the farmers’ voice is taken into consideration in the design, implementation and evaluation of global policies that have an impact on the agricultural sector.
All members of the WFO participated in a bottom up consultation process through which they were able to provide effective input to both the Strategic Framework and the Policy papers that this Organization will have to implement to achieve its mandate for the future of the global agricultural sector.
Under the theme The Future We Want to Harvest, HELSINKI 2017 will feature a political discussion on the four items that members have identified as priorities for the Organization: Food Security, Climate Change, Value Chain, and the Multilateral Processes on Agriculture. The four thematic discussions will be held consecutively and will bring to the adoption of thematic recommendations that will feed the General Assembly outcome document to be adopted on the last day. After the adoption, WFO farmers will discuss the General Assembly outcome document with high-level representatives of WFO partners from public and private sectors to look for viable solutions to achieve the global sustainable agenda on agriculture. What Future We Want to Harvest? This is question that will drive the overall discussion during the event.
The General Assembly will close with farm visits to the Finnish rural areas.
